NHS braces

At Aberdeen Orthodontics, we offer NHS braces as part of our commitment to accessible, specialist-led care. Most children who receive teeth braces on the NHS are referred by their general dentist, but you’re also welcome to contact us directly. Our experienced team is here to help you understand the process and support you through every stage of NHS orthodontic treatment in Aberdeen.

NHS Braces Eligibility

NHS orthodontic treatment is available for children and teens who meet specific medical criteria. To be eligible for NHS braces, patients must be under 18 and require treatment for health-related reasons - not purely cosmetic ones. Common qualifying cases include severe crowding, prominent or protruding teeth, or issues with bite and jaw development.

Eligibility is assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), a clinical scoring system that measures the severity of each case. Only patients who meet the required IOTN score can access teeth straightening through the NHS. If your child isn’t eligible, we’re happy to discuss private treatment options that are still affordable, flexible, and tailored to their needs.

Private patients

If your child doesn't meet the NHS funding criteria, or if they prefer clear braces or Invisalign® clear aligners, we can still provide treatment as a private patient. We offer flexible payment plans, affordable financing options, and a wide range of personalised orthodontic treatments.

As a specialist practice, we have a limited number of NHS treatment spaces available each year, which can result in a waiting list. If you think your child may be eligible for NHS care, we recommend booking an appointment as soon as possible to reserve the next available slot.
